Whitney Baldwin & Whitney Insurance, Chairman & CEO, Retired Board of Directors Sinclair Community College is one of the largest
community colleges in the country. In branching
out with new growth, Sinclair Community College
is truly coming home! The Dayton YMCA was the home of David Sinclairs first college in
1887 and it is fitting that the relationship between the College and the
YMCA of Greater Dayton continues. The Kleptz YMCA in Englewood and the Huber Heights YMCA held
groundbreaking ceremonies in July of 2005. The 15,000 square foot
facilities are expected to be operational in the summer of 2006. The
space will include classrooms, open computer labs, a small bookstore,
counseling offices, information library and office space. These Learning
Centers in the northern Montgomery County area will provide educational
programs where people live, work and play. We are excited to be partners
with Sinclair Community College to provide greater accessibility to
higher education and to add value for our YMCA members, and the
organization itself. This partnership benefits both institutions and is
consistent with the Ys credobuilding a healthy spirit, mind and body. With the new Learning Centers at our YMCA
branches, Sinclair Community College is indeed
coming home. These Centers are true to David
Sinclairs credo Find a need and endeavor to
meet it. 2005 Spirit, Mind and Body The YMCA of Greater Dayton is thrilled to
have the opportunity to review our 135 years
of service to the community. We can be
proud of the fact that we continue to fulfill
our mission of putting Judeo-Christian prin-
ciples into practice through programs that
build healthy spirit, mind and body for all! Our association continues to see unprec-
edented growth. In 2005, we opened the
Harry Schiewetz Assembly Hall at Camp
Kern. In addition, we opened the Huber
Heights YMCA and began planning and
construction on the Sinclair Community
College Fast Track Learning Centers at the
Kleptz and Huber Heights Ys. Our partner-
ship with Sinclair is a true homecoming!
The college, with classes started by David
Sinclair at the Dayton YMCA in 1887, has a
long history with our organization and we
share many of the same values. Our YMCA Neighborhood Development
Centers are thriving and continue to provide
expanded programming for kids and families in both east and west Dayton. Our youth and
family services can expand and we can con-
tinue to teach the four core values of caring,
honesty, respect and responsibility through
our inner-city programs. As you read through our annual report, you
will see a small sampling of the highlights of
our year. You will see how our membership,
programs, and facilities have stood the test
of time and evolved into what we are today.
We are grateful to our community partners
for helping us provide opportunities to peo-
ple of all ages, religions, and backgrounds. 2005 was a wonderful year for our YMCA!
Thanks to each of you for your continued help
and support. We look forward to many more
years of providing service and expanding our
mission within the Greater Dayton community. Diane Hirakawa

CEO Message There are currently more than 58,000 members of the YMCA of Greater Dayton. 2005 presented the YMCA of Greater Dayton
with many opportunities! As we looked around
our community, we continued to see areas
where our programs and services were
desperately needed. Beginning in 2005, students from Broadmoor
Elementary School in Trotwood participate in
a Healthy Kids Program, thanks to generous
donations from CareSource of Dayton and
others. Each weekday, 3rd-5th grade students
visit the Ys Neighborhood Development Center
at Cross Point United Methodist Church and
experience the wonderful programs the YMCA
offers. The children receive homework assist-
ance, nutritional snacks, health screenings,
wellness instruction and programming. In
addition, they are learning a variety of new
sports, and discovering the advantages of
exercise and active lifestyles. Community
partners including United Theological
Seminary, Dayton Center Courts and Tennis
Academy, Trotwood Madison Schools,
Babolat Tennis Equipment, and the Dayton The YMCA is not just a place for exercise-it is a place
where people are built...leaders are built. One of the programs that develops our leaders of the future is Junior
Leadership Dayton. In 2005, 60 students from 20 area high schools
were a part of this rewarding experience. Sponsored by area partners,
including the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Wright State Uni-
versity, the Dayton Foundation and the YMCA, this fabulous hands-on
learning experience focuses on leadership, teambuilding, group work,
community awareness and community service. In addition to Junior Leadership Dayton, YMCA Teens in Action is a
summer service-learning and civic-engagement program for youth
ages 13-15 designed to build self-esteem, provide positive values and
motivate local teens to think seriously about the positive difference
they can make in their community. This program has been very suc-
cessful and served 30 teens per week during the summer of 2005.
The teens volunteered a total of 540 community service hours work-
ing with other non-profit organizations in the area, such as House of
Bread, St. Vincent DePaul, Hannahs Treasure Chest and Five River
Metroparks. The YMCA of Greater Dayton continues to work with area
teens and youth to help build the leaders of tomorrow. Youth in Action Neighborhood Development Centers We provide children and families in east and west Dayton with programs that teach the YMCA core valuescaring, honesty, respect and responsibility Area Tennis Association have
joined efforts to provide these 50
children with new opportunities. True to the
Ys motto, these students are learning the
keys to success and becoming healthy,
strong kids! The YMCA is a place for family and friends
to gather, come home and strengthen each
other in spirit, mind, and body. The concept
of the YMCA Neighborhood Development
Centers came about in an effort to provide
such a gathering place for children and
families in both east and west Dayton. These
centers will continue to provide programs
and services assisting families who need
help the most. Members are able to partici-
pate in after-school programs, counseling
programs, expanded activities and events for
teens, youth sports programs, family-sup-
port programs and more! The YMCA of Greater Dayton... one extraordinary place! 20 area high schools partner with the YMCA in its Junior Leadership Dayton program.
