Alumnae and Community Alumnae Impact: Rocket Support on a Rough Day B Y N I N A C A M O R I A N O 0 5 Continued page 9 Even though I dont have children, I still enjoy the
back to school mentality
that fall brings. For me, it
is a reminder that I have a
few months left to achieve
my goals for the year. It
seems like a new year, where
I have a clean slate to
maybe dream a little bigger. This fall, Ive been reminded twice of how
great the Assumption
community is and the
strength of our sisterhood.
My 20-year reunion was the
weekend of September 7th.
We had a dance on Friday and
a luncheon Sunday. It was
fun to see how people have
changed and stayed the same.
We even got to watch our Senior
Talent Show (hope that doesnt
make it to U Tube), and the planning
committee prepared a slide show of
old photographs. I enjoyed catching
up with both friends I knew well in Continued page 12 Tracy Redmon 87 Forty of us find ourselves sitting together in the halls of our dorm, Main Campbell,
holding one another and looking at the
doorway to the room of our friend Leslie,
knowing that she will never come home to
us. You know there arent supposed to be
days like this, chokes our preceptor, trying
to offer words of comfort and solace in the
wake of a senseless, unfathomable act which
leaves us feeling numb and violated. Today I have seen my students bleeding and rushed to hospitals. I have had to tell a
colleague that her husband is never coming
home and even here Leslie He trails
off as all eyes turn back to the door of the
room in which our bright, smiling, intelligent,
dear friend once lived. I just he continues,
taking long pauses between each phrase, Im
just so grateful to be here with you all right
now. Were just truly a family. I have been very fortunate in my life in that I have had the privilege of being a member
of two very special, supportive communities.
First, I became a member of the Community
of Assumption, a warm, caring environment where cliques are a foreign
idea, and where a young
woman can freely and safely
mature and grow into
herself. Then, I became a
member of the equally
amazing Community of
Virginia Tech. Though on
the surface the two may appear to be very
different, they are actually very similar at
the core mutual respect, celebration, and
support are central to their being. In fact,
when I tried to explain to a friend from Tech
what my high school was like, I said Well
Assumption is like Tech except with no
boys. I actually think she understood. At 8:30 a.m. on April 16, 2007, I got up to take a shower. Business as usual. As
I was getting ready to go to my 10:10 a.m.
Spanish Oral Proficiency class, I had no idea
that when this day ended, thirty-two Hokies
would be murdered and twenty-five wounded
in the deadliest school shooting in United
States history. I did not know that one of
my friends, Ryan (affectionately known as Nina Camoriano fall_07.id 1 10/15/07 11:27:04 AM 1 9 6 9 Class Agents: Margie Shircliff Barrett Mary Dillon Cowley Kathy Wimberg Gray lost her mom, Sue C.

celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary.
They have two daughters, Katie, 17, who just
graduated from Mercy and is heading off

Kelly plays on two competitive tennis teams
and loves it! She would love to hear from
any of her fellow AHS grads. Her email is

Doug, have lived in Pickerington, Ohio, since
1991. They have two children, Ian, 13, and
Mackenzie, 10. Over the past year, Jackie Bloyd,
your alumnae liaison,
and I have visited
several reunions of
Assumption graduates.
We have shared
the laughter and
excitement of seeing friends from the past, heard stories of their
relationships with teachers (and pranks
they pulled), and were intrigued with their
reports on their career and parenting journeys.
The women from the sixties stare at me
when I enter, trying to remember who I am
from their class! It has all been great fun! The best part of our visits is realizing that, for the most part, our alums want
to be re-connected to Assumption. They
have an appreciation for their education
and the many relationships they developed
during their four years at AHS. Many now
are mothers of current students, some even
grandmothers, and they are amazed at our
growth, but also the strong feeling of com-
munity that is the very core of the school. When I took on the responsibility of the role of president, one of my goals was to bring
back the alums. Having been on staff for 28
years, I understand that the alumnae association
must be the underpinning of the school. I
think alums are willing to support AHS if
they are given the opportunity to do so. There are so many ways you can help! Come back for a game. Purchase an Assumption decal for your car from the
Campus Store. Join our newly formed
Booster Club. Come to Alumnae Association
meetings. Come to the Rocket Spectacular,
the Assumption Hall of Fame, the Alumnae
special performance of FAME. Those who
attended the Alumnae Father-Daughter
Dance had a fabulous time. Plan to come
when we hold the next dance in 2009.
The Walk-for-Assumption was a fun way
to spend a fall morning. Walk with us next
year. All of these events help our financial
aid grow to the level that it needs to be to
help our families attend what I proudly
believe is the best girls school in Louisville! We greatly need our alumnae base to support us. Assumption is healthy and
operating at full capacity were so proud
of who we are. But to maintain our vitality,
we must keep costs down so that we can
offer our exceptional high school experience
to all young women who wish to attend
here, not just those who can afford it. If you havent visited for awhile, give me a call. Ill be happy to give you a personal
tour and show you changes that will heighten
your pride in your alma mater! And remember
that you are, and will always be, a part of
the Community of Assumption. We hold
you and your families in our prayers. Cordially, Elaine Salvo A L E T T E R F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T Assumption Community Events ALU M NAE N E
