words from Psalm 34 were the Responsorial at the funeral Mass of
Father Charley Giacosa in October. I find them striking and inspiring
given the backdrop of a life of a Nashville Diocesan priest and
associate pastor at St. Henry’s. Fr. Giacosa celebrated his forty-fifth year of ordination this year, just prior to his passing. Even while suffering from
terminal cancer, Fr. Giacosa worked with his brother priests in preparation for
his death to select a passage from scripture that gives thanks. As I sat with my
young children in St. Henry’s, surrounded by thousands of people whose lives
were touched in some way by Fr. Giacosa, I was moved to tears at this selection. In that same spirit of gratitude, the month of November provides all of us with
two opportunities to give thanks to the Lord. The first is the Feast of All Saints,
commemorating the community of saints and the examples that they provide
for us as God’s people. Time and time again, the lives of the saints reflect the
paradox of joyous faith in suffering. The second is Thanksgiving. We all gather
with our families to give thanks for our lives, for the health of our families, and to
celebrate a moment in time with each other. Sometimes, taking a moment with each other is increasingly difficult in a
world ruled by BlackBerries, cell phones, and You Tube. Thanksgiving is an
opportunity to tell the ones we love why we give thanks for them in our lives. It
is an opportunity to show gratitude in the midst of any personal sufferings. It is
a moment to remember those who no longer sit at our table but who have joined
God’s table. This Thanksgiving, why not set aside some time amid the food,
festivities and football games to tell the ones you love (especially your children)
why they bring joy to your life? Why not take a couple extra minutes with God
while sitting in front of your Thanksgiving feast and praise Him for all that He has
done? “I will always thank the Lord; I will always praise God’s name.” (Psalm 34) On behalf of our entire faculty and staff, I wish to tell each of you how grateful
we are that you have entrusted your young men and women to our care and to
thank you for being part of the Father Ryan family. May God continue to bless your family throughout this year and into the next. Sincerely, Jim 2 Father Ryan High School Happenings Admissions Dates and

Nov. 2007 Father Ryan High School 3 29th Annual
Legacy Gala February 9, 2008 The Gala Committee is busy making plans for Father Ryan’s 29th
Annual Legacy Gala honoring Fr. Charley Giacosa. Fr. G, as he was
affectionately known, recently lost a brief but courageous battle with
pancreatic cancer. His leadership in the Diocese touched countless
lives, including his time as a teacher at Father Ryan from 1963 – 1970.
All proceeds from the Gala benefit our students and allow us to carry
out the mission of our school. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Volunteer An event of this magnitude takes many dedicated parents to help plan,
organize, and execute. If you haven’t already signed up to help with
a committee and would like to do so, please contact Pam Williams,
Volunteer Coordinator at 554-8661 or pamw@jteverett.com. donate Auction Items If you or someone you know has items to donate to the silent or live
auction, please contact our Auction Chairs, Donna and Steve Travis
at 310-4578 or steventravis@comcast.net. Silent auction items such
as vacation trips, jewelry, art, gift certificates (personal services,
restaurants, etc.), home items, event tickets, and autographed
memorabilia are always sought after auction items. sponsor the Legacy Gala Our generous Gala Patrons help underwrite the cost of our event,
allowing more of the Gala proceeds to directly benefit our students.
Contact Gala Co-Chair Steve Mullins ’75 at 292-4822 or legacygala@
fatherryan.org for more details on how you or your business can become
a 2008 Legacy Patron. Attend the Legacy Gala Gala Co-Chairs Steve ’75 and Sarah ‘77 Mullins (Marie ’08 and Ellen
’10) and Bob ’75 and Helen Forster (Matthew ’09 and Robert ’11)
cordially invite you to join them for an exciting evening honoring Fr.
Giacosa at the Cool Springs Marriott on Saturday, February 9, 2008. We
hope to see you there! “A children’s story for adults.” ~ Jim Leonard, JR When June’s father dies, she prays
for a healer to come to the small
town of Gray, so that no one will
ever suffer again; the next thing
she knows, there’s a tornado, and
a man in a balloon blows into town
claiming to be a doctor. At first,
the new doctor cures anything
and everything, but soon the town
begins to take ill with the mysterious
plague. Set in Indiana during the late
1800’s, ANATOMY OF GRAY deals
with death, loss, love, and healing in
a unique coming of age story. Anatomy of Gray features Alex White,
Catherine Glidwell, Julia Sharp and
Francis Corby. They are supported
by an outstanding ensemble who
include: Elizabeth Lanier, Sarah
Wathen, Emily Boyd, Adam Kaauwai,
Collin Roarty, Emily Scioneaux,
Shelby Davis, Patrick Cunningham,
Kristina Lumm, Zach Dugger, Rose
Street and Thomas McNamara.
These thespians are under the
student direction of senior Eric
Schoen. The Purple Masque Players will
present ANATOMY OF GRAY Thursday
November 15, Friday November
16 and Saturday November 17
at 7 PM in The Father Ryan High
School Center for the Arts. For ticket
information, please contact Kelli
McClendon at 615-383-4200 EXT
240. Theatre News Applause Please… The Purple Masque Players can not only be seen on the
boards in our Center for the Arts but also around town throughout the month of
November. In addition to student directing Anatomy of Gray, Eric Schoen will be
conspiring for the force of true love as Tranio in Harpeth Hall’s The Taming of the
Shrew November 1-3. As well as portraying Tiny Wingfield in Anatomy of Gray,
Elizabeth Lanier will become the conniving snake Kaa in Jungal Book produced
by Metro Parks Theatre and Music Department November 2-3, 8-9, 2007. Carter
Brallier and Tyler Brown are dancing and singing villains (or are they?) as Bun Foo
and Ching Ho in St. Cecilia’s Thoroughly Modern Millie November 8-11 and 16-18.
During the month of December, Sarah Holmes can be seen in Pull Tight Players
It’s A Wonderful Life. 4 Father Ryan High School Happenings Way to Go Irish! Father Ryan Singers Pictured here are Sarah Wathen, Jenny Holzmer, and Ali Keith, who auditioned for and won places in Mid-State Choirs. On November 15, in a public performance
at Tennessee State University, Sarah Wathen will be performing with the Mid-
State Women’s Chorus, and Jenny and Ali will be performing with the Mid-State
Mixed Chorus. Sarah also placed in the All-State SATB Chorus, and Ali is an alternate for the All-State Chorus. Along with every other singer who placed in the All-State choirs,
Sarah and Ali will have to survive the 2nd Tier Audition in order to finally perform
as part of the All-State Chorus in February. The Father Ryan singers are busy preparing different styles of music for the various occasions for which they will perform. As a part of the commemoration
service for 9/11, the group sang “The Star-spangled Banner,” and will be singing
this piece, as well as another patriotic song, at the Veteran’s Breakfast held at
Ryan on Nov 9. In the spring, the chorus will be performing at two adjudicated choral festivals, one here in Nashville and the other at a yet-to-be-determined city such as Chicago
or Orlando. The Singers are currently rehearsing music for the joint Band/Choral Christmas Concert to be held in the Center for the Arts on December 6. Their performance
pieces will range in style from the traditional German carol “Lo, Ho a Rose E’er
Blooming,” and the contemporary “Lullaby,” to the Calypso beat of “Mary’s Little
Boy Child” and the popular “Santa Baby.” Come share the spirit of Christmas with
us! Academic Achievement The STOA Chapter of the National

Marching Band took a clean sweep
at the TRI competition held at John
Overton High School. Father Ryan
won their class in every caption in
the prelims performance, and they
won the entire contest in finals.
The band competed against the
perennial powerhouse bands such
as at McGavock High School and
Columbia High School. Despite being
a band twice as small, Father Ryan
won High Music, High Visual, High
General Effect, High Color Guard,
and High Percussion and scored an
88.2, which was four points higher
than the second place band. Lady Irish Freshman
Volleyball Great Season Congratulations to the Lady Irish Freshman volleyball team for winning their regular
season with a 13-1 record. They placed 3rd in the city tournament, being beaten
by eventual champion Hillwood High School. With the two best freshmen players
being moved up to junior varsity at the beginning of the season, Shannon Carr
and Kelsey Towns, the remaining players had to really work hard to improve in key
positions like middle hitter and setter. Most improved for the season was Chizo
Obi, Katie Bontrager, Holly Strebel and Leah Byrd. Also important to the team’s
success were Mary Pat Conway, Anna Bauer, Sarah Kate Hutchison, Taylor Ernst,
Caroline Johnson, Sarah Sharp, Elle Collins and Hailey Booker. Coaches for the
team are Paula Jackson and Ashlee Schenk, and they would like to thank the best
managers in the city, Eileen Brennan and Sarah Boyd! Homecoming Queen Congratulations to the entire Homecoming Court and Melissa Molteni who was
crowned the 2007 Homecoming Queen. 6 Father Ryan High School Happenings 2007-2008 ACT AND SAT SCHEDULES FATHER RYAN HIGH SCHOOL CODE NUmBER: 431-665 test ReGIstRAtIOn deAdLIne test dAte SAT I/II December 26, 2007 January 26, 2008 SAT I (only) January 29, 2008 March 1, 2008 SAT I/II April 1, 2008 May 3, 2008 SAT I/II May 6, 2008 June 7, 2008 ACT November 2, 2007 December 8, 2007 ACT January 4, 2008 February 9, 2008 ACT March 7, 2008 April 12, 2008 ACT May 9, 2008 June 14, 2008 First Semester Exams First semester exams are scheduled to take place Friday, December 14

request permission for students to take semester exams early. This creates
undue strain for the school schedule, as well as creating serious issues of
exam security and confidentiality. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. sara hayes, Academic dean NATIONAL SPANISH EXAm AT FATHER RYAN the national spanish exam
will be administered at Father

school day in March. the
online test will take about 45
minutes and the cost will be

we offered this opportunity and
our students did very well. It
is an excellent way to prepare

BENEFIT SENIORS With Thanksgiving approaching and
tailgating in high gear, remember to
use your Kroger Gift cards for those
purchases. Add to cards you have
already purchased or stop by the
FRHS Advancement Office to buy a
card. Buy additional cards to go into
Thanksgiving baskets. The $5 cost
of the card goes towards your first
purchase. Add additional money to
the card before the cashier starts
scanning the items or before you
give that card to someone in need.
Four percent of all expenditures on the card goes to FRHS Project Graduation. With so many meals to prepare over the next couple of months, at least we can know we are helping our seniors when we use the Kroger Gift card bought from FRHS. Father Ryan Basketball Ready to Begin The 2007- 2008 basketball season gets underway starting
Nov. 26 when the teams travel to
Hillsboro High School. Girls play at 6
p.m. and boys to follow. That night,
the new Hillsboro gymnasium is
being dedicated to long-time coach
Tommy Frensley, who many Father
Ryan coaches are familiar with. The
following night, the Irish travel to
play CPA for the first time ever. With
only one away game in December,
the Irish hope that the home court
advantage helps them get through a
tough schedule. Starting January 4 when the boys go to MBA and the girls to Harpeth
Hall, the region matchups begin. This
year our region includes Knoxville
Webb, Baylor, GPS, and McCallie.
The middle/east region should be
one of the toughest regions in the
state, including DI and DII. Check
