$2,818.92 (Effective 01/01/2009) POSITION Positions allocable to this class receive close administrative and technical INFORMATION supervision from an Attorney who has passed the State Bar of California
Examination with work reviewed on a regular basis. Incumbents must have
concurrent enrollment in an accredited or approved Law School, having at least
one year of the study of law. These positions are designed to provide incumbents
experience with the practical application of law, including civil, municipal, criminal
and business law. Incumbents must possess excellent analytical skills required to
research, interpret and apply current case law, legal statutes, and related legal
issues, to assist in the preparation of legal brief, memoranda, resolutions, or other
legal documents for judicial proceedings. Law Clerks must possess considerable
knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of legal research.
Incumbents must also possess reasonable knowledge of California State law, local
legislation pertaining to the County, and administrative law including regulations
and their enforcement. ESSENTIAL JOB Conducts legal research, prepares written reports, and assists in drafting various FUNCTIONS legal documents (e.g., opinions, pleadings, briefs, and points and authorities);
prepares and organizes extensive legal discovery, evidence, or exhibits to be
presented at trials, preliminary hearings, or law and motion hearings; reads,
understands, and analyzes legal documents (e.g., pleadings, police reports,
courtroom transcripts, expert witness reports, statutory and non-statutory legal
motions, affidavits, arrest and search warrants, court orders, statutes, appellate
case law, and jury instructions) related to criminal prosecution; calls and schedules
witnesses for preliminary hearings, law and motion hearings, misdemeanor jury and
court trials, and juvenile adjudications; prepares witnesses in courtroom procedures
and appropriate protocol; communicates with witnesses, defendants, law
enforcement, investigators, attorneys, and other interested parties regarding cases;
and assists in computer data input work in connection with legal matters as

State Bar of California First Year Law Student's Examination. Physical Class: 2 - Light:
Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit,
and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved. Licenses: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an
alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential
functions. Special Requirement Information: *An approved law school is defined as a law
school approved by the American Bar Association. **ACCREDITATION STATEMENT: Accredited institutions are those listed in the
publications of regional, national, or international accrediting agencies which are
accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American
Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are
acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been
evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited
institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The
National Association of Credential Evaluation Services and Association of
International Credential Evaluators, Inc. Applicants must attach proof (original or photocopy) of current enrollment
indicating grade level to their application at the time of filing. Applicants enrolled in a non-approved law school must attach proof of
successful completion of the State Bar of California -- First Year Law
Student's Examination to their application at the time of filing. APPLICATIONS LACKING THE ABOVE REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION WILL BE
REJECTED. ATTACHING A CALIFORNIA STATE BAR LICENSE IS NOT
QUALIFYING.
SPECIAL Shift: Any Shift INFORMATION Applicants must be willing and able to work in any area of Los Angeles County.
Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, and
weekends. Successful applicants will be required to complete and pass a thorough
background investigation, including a fingerprint search prior to appointment. Examples of disqualifying factors are: Any felony conviction or conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral
turpitude.
Job related misdemeanor convictions.
Certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations such as three
(3) moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at-fault accidents; or
applicant placed on a three (3) year probation.
Poor credit history.
Poor employment history.
Substance abuse.

EXAMINATION This examination will consist of an interview covering education and experience CONTENT weighted 100%. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the
examination in order to be placed on the eligible register. RETAKE PERIOD: Successful candidates will be placed on the eligible register for
a period of six (6) months. After the candidates expire from the register, they may
reapply if the examination is still open for filing. Candidates, who reapply, may
retake the interview test or may have their previous interview test scores extended
for an additional six (6) months by advising the Examination Unit staff at the time of
filing. When a candidate retakes the interview test, the last score achieved will be
effective. Candidates who fail the interview test must wait six (6) months before
filing a new application and retaking the interview. ELIGIBILITY The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be INFORMATION placed on the eligible register in Band order, based on their score, for a period of
six (6) months following the date of promulgation. SOCIAL SECURITY Section 419 (c) of Public Law 108-203, the Social Security Protection Act of 2004, ACT OF 2004 requires State and local government employers to disclose the effect of the
Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset Provision to
employees hired on or after January 1, 2005, in jobs not covered by Social Security.
The County of Los Angeles does not participate in the Social Security System. All
newly hired County of Los Angeles employees must sign a statement (Form
SSA-1945) prior to the start of employment indicating that they are aware of a
possible reduction in their future Social Security benefit entitlement. For more
