LIGURE OR RAPALLO Days at leisure to enjoy the Italian Riviera
and the Portofino Peninsula. This area forms
one of the most attractive landscapes on the
Italian Riviera and, perhaps, in Italy. Santa
Margherita Ligure is a charming and
fashionable seaside resort just next to
Portofino.
Rapallo is a resort of international reputation
with an ideal climate and is next to Santa
Margherita Ligure. A boat trip to Portofino is
a must and can be taken from either town.
Portofino, a favorite haunt of artists, is a little
fishing village port that lies at the head of a
perfectly shaped natural creek. Its gaily
colored houses stand out clearly amidst the
greenery. Walk to its Lighthouse in the early
evening for a particularly beautiful view of
the sunset over the Gulf of Rapallo. Another
possibility is a drive to Camogli, a small old-
fashioned port. Its attractions are a popular
little beach and hills clothed in pine and olive
groves. Yet another boat trip worth taking is
to San Fruttuoso, a beautiful fishing village
located at the head of a narrow bay under
the Monte Portofino. DAY 5: SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE
OR RAPALLO/CINQUE TERRE This morning check out of your hotel and
drive to the Cinque Terre, or the "Five
Lands". The Cinque Terre lies northwest of
the Gulf of La Spezia, and till now, are
linked only by mule track and accessible by
rail or water. They form one of the most
astonishing sights in Italy. The five lands or
towns are: Monterosso Al Mare, the only one of the towns with a beach; Corniglia,
with its small church adorned with a rose;
Manarola, with its houses clinging to a slope
which descends to the dock; The Via
dell'Amore (Road of Love), a curious road
hewn out of the rock and overhanging the
sea that links Manarola and Riomaggiore;
Riomaggiore, the medieval village that lies in
the narrow valley of a torrent; Vernazza,
(which together with Riomaggiore) are the
most characteristic of the Cinque Terre.
Narrow streets, arcades, little squares, old
houses, forts and bell towers create an
unforgettable picture. Taste the strong and
sweet wine known to the natives as
"sciacchetra " while enjoying the views! DAYS 6 & 7: CINQUE TERRE Days at leisure to enjoy walking the towns
along the cliff walk, or simply bathing in the
clear blue waters. Take a drive to
Portovenere - dominated by a 12th-16th
century Citadel. Portovenere's charm lies in
the ancient houses, some dating back to the
12th century that line the port and the main
street. The Church of St. Lawrence (San
Lorenzo), halfway up the slope, dates from
the 12th century. Continuing toward the end
of the promontory, descend to the cave
known as Byron's Grotto. See a beautiful
view of a creek surrounded by superb
stratified rocks, surmounted by the ancient
fortress. Lord Byron found here the
inspiration for his poem, The Corsair. DAY 8: CINQUE TERRE/GENOA/ HOME This morning, drive to Genoas airport to
