Ireland, and its county is the largest.
The settlement dates from the sixth century
monastic community founded by St Finbarr
(onnbharr is Irish for blondie) on the rocky
plateau where the cathedral bearing his name
now stands.
The valley of the river Lee below was mostly
marsh (corcagh in Irish), and until the 18th
century the city streets were mingled with
waterways where the merchants ships moored.
Cork has the second-largest natural deep-water
harbour in the world, and was the last
victualling port for transatlantic sail and steam
