They are subject to change . A NTARCTICA ~ A N O VERVIEW Antarctica is six million square miles of glistening ice sheets, enormous glaciers, floating ice shelves and statuesque
icebergs with untold secrets that have drawn adventurers since the 19th-century obsessed with unlocking them. Though
it is the most isolated continent on the planet, it is one of the most vital providing 70% of the worlds fresh water and 90%
of its ice. Also, it is the driest, highest, windiest and coldest of all continents. Scientists spend months ensconced in small
labs to monitor global climate changes. You will spend 11 days aboard a comfortable expedition vessel unearthing your
own discoveries, from crouching on the ice-hard ground while watching hundreds of thousands of comical penguins and
seeing massive elephant seals defending their turf, and hearing the swish of fast-flying albatrosses while fierce leopard
seals bask on an iceberg. Explorer Roald Amundsen wrote, The land looks like a fairytale, this is one fairytale that you
can make come to life. P EREGRINE M ARINER (A KADEMIK I OFFE ) ~ Y OUR V ESSEL The Mariner is a Scandinavian-built modern and ice-strengthened vessel ideally suited to provide a comfortable and
pleasurable adventure through the Antarctic waters. As a working scientific research vessel, it is designed to run quietly,
and is highly qualified to perform delicate and sensitive hydro-acoustic work. It has external stabilizers, built-in trimming
system and two powerful engines allowing it to reach a cruising speed of 14.5 knots in still-wind conditions. Passenger
areas are heated and/or air-conditioned. The bridge is open to travelers virtually 24/7 manned by an officer and sailor to
pass on information and to answer any questions; the chart and navigation room is available too. The following amenities
and facilities are available: large and small meeting spaces, slide, video and overhead projectors, bar, lounge, library,
video room, gym, sauna, swimming pool, elevator, gift shop and basic infirmary with crew doctor. Dining area
accommodates all passengers in one seating. W ILD W ATCH ~ B IRDS Antarctic penguins and seabirds have physically evolved to leap from the water at substantial heights to quickly reach the safety of ice edges and rock ledges. Thirty-five seabird species live south of the Antarctic Convergence with only 19 species that breed on the continent.
Penguins: Macaroni, Chinstrap, Adelie, Emperor, King, Rockhopper and Gentoo Seabirds: Southern Royal, Black-browed, Light-mantled Sooty, Wandering, Yellow-nosed Albatross, Antarctic
Cormorant, Antarctic Fulmar, Kelp Gull, Giant, Antarctic, Cape, Great-winged, White-headed, Atlantic, Wilsons
Storm, Black-bellied and Snowy Petrel, Lesser (Black-faced), Greater and Snowy Sheathbill, Antarctic (Brown),Sub-
Antarctic and South Polar Skua and Antarctic Tern. W ILD W ATCH ~ S EALS A signature species of the Southern Ocean, the Antarctic seals are protected by the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals. The continent supports a larger population than the Arctic due to rich feeding areas and a lack of native predators, such as the polar bear. Therefore they have little fear of people.
Southern elephant and fur seals do venture onto the continent, the Weddell, Ross, crab eater and leopard seals are
considered true Antarctic species. W ILD W ATCH ~ W HALES Whales in the Southern Ocean were hunted almost to extinction during the 18 th and early 19 th centuries; now with international regulations their numbers are recovering and the entire area around Antarctica has been declared an International Whale Sanctuary monitored closely by the International Whaling Commission. They are the only mammals, other than manatees, that live their entire lives in the water. All of the Antarctic species migrate long distances from the nutrient-rich Southern Oceans to warmer northern waters to breed and give birth. As a side note, you may see the bottle-nosed dolphin when passing through the Beagle Channel and/or Drake Passage; however only the hourglass dolphin is found in the icy waters around Antarctica and is rarely spotted.
Whales: killer (orca), sperm, blue, fin, humpback, Antarctic Minke, sei, southern bottlenose, southern fourtooth and
southern right W ILD W ATCH ~ V EGETATION Antarcticas extreme environmental conditions create a habitat where only the hardiest survive and few plant species have been recorded on the 2% of the continent that is ice-free 150 lichens, 30 mosses, some fungi, red algae and one liverwort. nights to cross the area from Cape Horn to the Antarctic Peninsula. Engage in a series of talks that prepare you for the
days ahead. The deck provides excellent views of birds whipping through the air, including the Black-browed, Grey-
headed, and majestic Wandering Albatross with a wingspan of 12 feet. Delightful petrels are abundant, such as the Giant,
Wilsons Storm and Cape. You may even get your first glimpse of southern bottlenose and humpback whale and
penguin. Cross the Antarctic convergence where the southern tip of the Atlantic (Scotia Sea) meets the southeastern
Pacific extending into the Antarctic Ocean where the waters collide with icebergs.

D AYS 6/7/8/9/10 ~ W EDNESDAY /T HURSDAY /F RIDAY /S ATURDAY /S UNDAY ~ D ECEMBER 31/J ANUARY 1/2/3/4 ~ A NTARCTICA /S OUTH S HETLAND I SLANDS Leave the Passage and cruise into the waterways of the
Antarctica Peninsula among the South Shetland Islands, an
archipelago of over 20 islands and your first glimpse of
Antarctica. Weather will dictate your route and excursions
ashore, but be assured that everyday will bring unforgettable
sights and sounds. Whales may be seen in the open waters;
the sperm whale made famous by Melvilles Moby Dick
sometimes looks like a large log floating on the water; the
entertaining humpbacks breaching, fluking and singing; the
inquisitive Antarctic Minke; the Southern Sei covered with
white scars; Antarctic Fins long and sleek body; the flat and
u-shaped head of the southern blue; the distinctive black and
white killer (orca); the unique southern rights callus that
cover its body. The daylight hours are longer, extending your
opportunities for multiple excursions each day via inflatable
zodiac boats that will taxi you to the shores of Livingstone,
Half Moon and King George Islands. Activities include
hiking, observing wildlife and cruising alongside icebergs
and whales.
K ING G EORGE I SLAND At the end of 1820 through early 1821, eleven British men
from the Lord Melville did not set sail in time to avoid the
onset of winter to return to England and were the first to
successfully survive the harsh winter conditions hunkered
down on King George Island. Krill is abundant in the Admiralty Bay off the Island a favorite of the humpback whale. The largest of the South Shetland Islands, over 90% is
permanently glaciated and populated with elephant, Weddell and leopard seal that are always on alert for tasty
Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguin. This island is also home to research stations from 12 countries and a Russian Orthodox
Church manned year-round by a priest one of the few permanent structures on the continent.
Did you know: The Emperor Penguin may be the only bird never to set foot on land and breeds the furthest south of any penguin species forming large colonies on the sea ice surrounding the Antarctic continent. Did you know: The endangered humpback whale may live up to 95 years and to support their 65-ton weight they consume 2,000 9,000 lbs of fish and krill per day. Macaroni Penguin Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change . H ALF M OON I SLAND You can spend hours observing the massive
breeding colony of Chinstrap Penguin on the
crescent-shaped Half Moon Island
entertainment at its best as they pester and
steal rocks from each other sporting red
beaks just like Rudolph the Red-Nose
Reindeer. During summer
(December/January) you will be able to spot
fluffy chicks. The Marine Ornithology
Organization recorded ten species of birds
that nest here, including Antarctic Tern,
Blue-eyed Shag (Antarctic Cormorant) and
Kelp Gull. Fur seals are commonly seen with
their barking alarms signaling that you have entered their territory, and elephant seals sometimes lounge on the pebble shores of the coastline. Often you may see
humpback and killer whales patrolling the shores. Views of the glaciers and mountains of Livingstone Island are
spectacular.
Did you know: The Chinstrap Penguin forms a strong bond with its partner returning together to the same nesting site every year.
L IVINGSTONE I SLAND The greatest concentrations of 19 th -century historical sites on the Antarctic continent are
located on this Island and it is protected as a Site
of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) under the
Antarctic Treaty. In recent decades the ice cliffs have been withdrawing exposing new coves,
beaches and points that form most of the
coastline. Basically covered by an ice cap, the
Islands landscape is a unique mixture of deep
crevasses, ice domes, plateaus, valley glaciers
and ash layers from centuries-old volcanic
activity on Deception Island. Up-close views of
Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins, with the
occasional yellow mop-top of the Macaroni
Penguin make for an exciting stop; in addition,
the giant elephant seal that can weigh up to five
tons may be seen lumbering ashore as well as
dueling fur seals posturing with each other to
defend their territories. Scour the ridges for
nesting Wilsons Storm and Giant Petrels.
Did you know: The most numerous of the seal species, crabeater populations were not decimated by hunters. Almost 80% have encountered leopard seals in their youth and the scars make for unattractive pelts. Their name is a misnomer they do not eat crab, only krill. Killer Whale Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change . D ECEPTION I SLAND /P ENDULUM C OVE Enter through a narrow passage (Neptunes Bellows) protected by high cliffs for an incredible dreamscape of scenery, the
flooded volcanic caldera of Deception Island (weather permitting), one of the most perfect crater islands in the world where cold waters mix with the Bays thermal ones, creating a mystical scene of rising steam. Watch for the spotted
leopard seal possibly breaking through the ice to grab unsuspecting prey. Unique to this island is its unusual terrain of
dark volcanic sand and rocks. Hundreds of thousands of penguin may be found here. Look for the Weddell seal easily
identified by its small head and cat-like whiskers. Go ashore to visit an old whaling station. Adventurous souls may take
a dip in the volcanic-heated shallow waters of Pendulum Cove.
Did you know: The Weddell seal has a relatively short lifespan (10-12 years) usually succumbing to starvation because of the wear and tear on their teeth from breaking through the ice. They spend most of their lives underwater beneath ice packs of ten feet or more.
P ARADISE H ARBOR OR H OPE B AY Breathtaking landscapes greet you upon entering Paradise Harbor
or Hope Bay (dependent upon weather, both may be included) off
the mainland. Impressive icebergs in all shapes and sizes painted
in hues of brilliant blues to the whitest of whites break off in
monstrous chunks and crash into the ocean sounding like a clap of
thunder (known as glacial calving). The turquoise waters act as
mirrors for the surrounding glaciers and snow-covered peaks. The
small crabeater seal may be seen resting on ice flows near the
shore. The remains of a Swedish stone expedition hut from the
winter of 1903 may be seen here. Dependent on weather you will
step onto the worlds coldest, driest and windiest continent
Antarctica and pitch a tent for the night if you so desire colonies
of Gentoo and Chinstrap Penguin find the conditions tolerable! Leopard seal Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change . Did you know: Adelie Penguins are large in attitude and small in size. Looking like they just left a black-tie party, the Adelie will rush out of its colony to attack visiting scientists with its flippers. L EMAIRE C HANNEL Time and weather permitting slowly navigate the narrow Lemaire Channel a
glacier-lined fiord with cliffs towering 2,300 feet on each side. The Adelie Penguin
with its black head and blue eyes may be found here ever on alert because they are
a favorite of the leopard seal. An otherworldly feeling permeates the atmosphere
as you gaze into the still waters where Minke and humpback whale sometimes can
be seen basking in this serene and beautiful passage.

Participants must be able to climb in and out of 4x4 vehicles and zodiac boats unassisted. The waters of the Drake
Passage can be some of the roughest seas in the world at other times they are so smooth it is referred to as the Drake
Lake. Though your vessel is among the most stable ships in its class, it is impossible to remove all motion. Unless you
are certain you are impervious to the problem, you should take precautions against seasickness. On the post extension,
participants should also be able to tolerate riding on uneven, bumpy roads for long periods of time (3-4 hours maximum).
Participants should also be able to tolerate nature walks at an easy pace on uneven terrain, sometimes uphill and in wet
terrain, for three or four hours at a time. You should be in good physical health to enjoy this destination to its fullest.
General
True adventure in travel can sometimes be accompanied by unexpected changes in conditions, itineraries and
occasionally your accommodations. Participants should travel with a spirit of adventure and flexibility. Remember to
pack your patience and sense of humor! Be willing to look past self-imposed ideals of Western amenities and do not
compare these new experiences with your life back home. Travel often includes visiting destinations with modest
infrastructures and a bending definition of comfort. That being said some locations are nestled in absolute luxury where
pampering is the norm. Participants should generally be in good health and prepared to travel in locations with limited
medical facilities.
Air Schedules
Choosing the best possible air arrangements for our travelers is always a challenge. We work with many airlines that
offer the best level of service, routings and value for our programs. While there may indeed be more direct routings
available with another airline, the cost of these flights may not be within the budget that allows us to give you the best
value possible. If you prefer to purchase your own international air, please feel free to choose the land only rate for this
program. The start and end city for this program is Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Upon registration, you must provide your full legal name as it appears on your passport. In the event an airline ticket is issued with incorrect information you have provided, you will be responsible for charges associated with reissuing the ticket.
