Antarctica
wilderness at the farthest reaches of the globe. We are delighted to present
our program of Antarctic journeys for 2008 and 2009 aboard three
shipsthe Adventurer, the Hanseatic, and the Corinthian II, each a deluxe
vessel specifically designed for exploring this legendary lost continent. Traveling on the Adventurer, a handsome 122-guest vessel, we explore
all three prime wildlife destinations of the Southern Ocean: the Falkland
Islands, supremely isolated in mid-ocean and teeming with wildlife, the
breathtaking glaciated mountains of South Georgia Island, famed for
colonies of king penguins over 100,000-strong, and the glorious Antarctic
Peninsula. On the luxurious Hanseatic, catering to 184 guests, were thrilled to offer
the ultimate Antarctic adventure including the wildlife-rich oasis of the
Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and the epic Antarctic Peninsula,
with visits to hidden bays full of drifting icebergs, and shore walks amid
chattering penguins and their chicks. Aboard the 114-guest Corinthian II, with its classic yacht-like atmosphere,
our expedition focuses on the rugged coast of the awe-inspiring Antarctic
Peninsula, a land of towering mountains, island-sized icebergs, spectacular
glacier-lined fjords, scientific research stations, and a profusion of wildlife. All three vessels offer deluxe ocean-view staterooms, a fleet of go-anywhere
Zodiacs for exciting daily shore visits, and a top team of on-board
naturalists and Antarctic experts to help deepen our understanding of this
unearthly realm, both on shore excursions and during lecture programs. Our Antarctica program is always a popular one, so I encourage you
to contact us as soon as possible. An adventure in Antarctica is truly a

Adventurer December 10-29, 2008 We set off aboard the 122-guest Adventurer to explore
the wildlife-rich oasis of the Falkland Islands, then head
to breathtaking South Georgia Island, with its 100,000-
strong penguin colonies and legends of Shackleton, and
finally the epic Antarctic Peninsula itself, where whales
often breach alongside us and seabirds and penguins
nest in vast colonies. All three of these magnificent
places are vibrant with incredible displays of wildlife
during the austral summer, when the sun emerges after
the long winter night and the sparkling, krill-rich waters
teem with life. Our fleet of go-anywhere Zodiacs gives
us fantastic access to hidden bays full of drifting icebergs
and walks on shores brimming with chattering penguins
and their chicks, while a team of expert naturalists and
historians brings the story of Antarctica to life for us. DeCembeR 10-11

SouTh GeoRGIa ISL anD / aT Sea Rising 10,000 feet out of the Scotia Sea and covered with glaciers, South Georgia is a magnificent island teeming with a stunning variety of wildlife, including nesting sites of waved albatross and breeding colonies of fur seals, which have made a remarkable recovery from near extinction by seal hunters at the turn of the century. South Georgia is synonymous with Shackletons 1916 heroic rescue of the crew of the Endurance. After a grueling 16-day sea journey across 800 miles of ocean in search of rescue for his stranded crew of 22, Shackleton and his five comrades crossed South Georgias treacherous interior of glaciated mountains, marching without rest for 6 hours and emerging, nearly unrecognizable, at Stromness, a former whaling station. We board our Zodiacs to head ashore to St. Andrews Bay, whose shore is home to the largest king penguin colony in the world, and at the former whaling station of Grytviken, we visit the simple grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton. You must be sure to purchase your Buenos Aires / Ushuaia round trip flights with your international air tickets. 5 exPeDITIon LeCTuReRS A full complement of expert naturalists will accompany your trip, providing lectures on the regions fascinating biodiversity and polar exploration history. Naturalists on board the Adventurer may include: Rick Price served as a marine biologist for the British Antarctic Survey in the South Orkneys before becoming a wildlife cameraman specializing in underwater photography. He has worked for the BBC Natural History Unit, the Discovery Channel, and on landmark nature documentaries including Sir David Attenboroughs The Life of Birds and Life in the Freezer. Ricks photography has revealed the beauty of many remote areas and he considers it an honor to capture these places on film for others to enjoy. Rick has sailed with Adventurer in Antarctica for many seasons and is always a popular speaker and guide.
Tony Dorr is a field biologist who has worked in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions for the last several years. His work has included spending nine months on Macquaire Island studying elephant seals, living on sea ice to research Weddell seals, and six months on the extremely remote Heard Island studying macaroni penguins. While on Heard Island, he also filmed a documentary for the ABC network on the isolated living conditions of the island. As a biologist and guide, Tony has also led groups through remote regions of southern Africa and the Gobi Desert in Mongolia while undertaking ornithological surveys.
David Dallmeyer, Professor of Geology at the University of Georgia, has researched the processes of mountain building and plate tectonics, with field work on all continents, and has organized research expeditions with the US Antarctic Research Program. David is the author of several scholarly books as well as a nationally popular introductory geology textbook now in its sixth edition. His contagious enthusiasm for geology and glaciology has been much appreciated by Adventurer passengers on many previous voyages. M/S Adventurer The 1-guest M/S Adventurer was completely rebuilt in 1997-1998 by Scandinavian craftsmen, and features a spacious covered promenade with a beautiful, wide wooden deck of varnished Oregon pine. The all-outside staterooms have lower beds, private bathrooms, and individual temperature controls. The two lounges, library, and dining salon are window-lined. A workout room and beauty salon contribute to your comfort, and there is a ship physician on board. Cuisine is healthful, nutritious American food influenced by regional culinary traditions. It is freshly prepared and served in single leisurely seatings. The ship carries a fleet of ten Zodiacs and has an ice class rating of A-1.
