health care professional. 2. If you feel nervous about going back to your health care professional, try practicing what you want
to say with a friend or family member. It may also help to take someone along with you on your
visits to your health care professional. 3. Be sure your health care professional knows about all other medicines you're taking. 4. Remember, your health care professional can't help you get relief unless you tell him or her about
your symptoms. 5. Although chest pain can be a symptom of acid reflux disease, it can also be a sign of heart
disease. If you experience chest pain, see your health care professional immediately. 6. Don't lie down after eating. Wait at least 3 hours after you've eaten before lying down. 7. Keep a food diary. For at least a week, write down what you eat and when you experience
symptoms. This information can help your health care professional help you plan changes in your
eating habits. 8. Avoid common food triggers. These include spicy foods, citrus fruits, onions, high-fat foods,
alcohol, and coffee. 9. Ask your health care professional questions at the beginning of your appointment. Your health
care professional may not have adequate time to discuss your concerns if you wait until the end
of the appointment to mention them. 10. Smoking may aggravate symptoms in some people. It is a good idea to quit smoking, anyway. 11. Try elevating the head of your bed. If you suffer at nighttime from heartburn due to acid reflux
disease, elevating the head of your bed at least six inches with blocks or placing a foam wedge
under your torso will keep you in an upright position as you sleep, and this may help to keep
gastric juices from rising up into your esophagus. 12. Always remember don't make any changes in your treatment program without consulting your
health care professional. 13. Take your medication at the same time every day. 14. Leave yourself a reminder note. 15. Take your medication with another daily activity such as brushing your teeth. 16. Ask someone to remind you to take your medication. 17. Set an alarm clock to remind yourself.
