To: Ian Subject: RE: Cheap promotion - Kokoda We didn't have any producers on site Ian. It was just too hard. I can't force a producer to
walk the Track. Kochie's just crazy. The cameramen and audio mixer volunteered.
There was no room on the chopper for a producer either. We had one flight in and one flight
out.

I'm not going to criticise Kochie. He's done it tough. Much tougher than we revealed on air.
He's done more to teach kids about Kokoda than any school history lesson.

We learn from our mistakes -- and I'm not dodging responsibility. I'm taking the wrap. My
previous explanation was just that - an explanation.

Thanks Ian,
Adam -----Original Message----- From: Ian Sent: Tuesday, 25 April 2006 4:53 To: Boland, Adam
Subject: RE: Cheap promotion - Kokoda Adam, Obviously youve copped more than your fair share of criticisms over time. People arent
cynical towards TV programs, theyre cynical towards politicians, religions, large and small
corporate citizens and the media in general. What I find a shame these days is that its never anyones fault, its always someone else! This mornings mistake wasnt a third partys mistake. Unfortunately for you it was your
mistake as Executive Producer. It was your mistake in not having managerial rules and
production procedures in place specifically addressing the all too obvious issue of how your
channel will be seen in the very sensitive area of an Anzac Day memorial service telecast.
Also, unfortunately for you, you didnt have someone on site (the producer or even Mr. Koch)
who had the nous to recognize that their just wasnt something quite right or appropriate
about only the 3 main people wearing the logo. I dont think there was any mistake as per your definition, I tend to think that it was a case of
extremely poor judgement by your on site producer, by Mr. Koch and by the politicians. Yes
they were all tired, dirty and hungry, but they are also mature, well paid, experienced
professionals experienced at satellite telecasts, journalistic duties and political decorum
respectively)! I dont know if Im alone in these concerns or whether Im just one of many complainants.
What I do doubt is that well see any apology from Channel 7 for the mistake. I repeat, I dont doubt your embarrassment and sorrow, therefore I dont doubt your word! Somehow I fear that well have to agree to disagree! Yours sincerely Ian -----Original Message----- From: Boland, Adam Sent: Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:33 To: Ian
Subject: RE: Cheap promotion - Kokoda Ian,
I don't blame you for it -- but isn't it a shame that people are so cynical about television
programs these days? At times, so am I.

I've told you the truth, but you doubt my word. That's of course your right and, because you
don't know me, perhaps not surprising.

All I can do is give you my perspective. I think it would be wrong to judge everyone in the
industry as the type of characters once portrayed in Frontline. I'd like to think the people I
work with here at Sunrise genuinely care about what we do.

This morning was a mistake. It wasn't intentional. It wasn't planned. No money changed
hands. It wasn't marketing. It was an innocent mistake made by a third party. It happens. I
wish it didn't - but it does.

I'm sorry I can't put it any other way.

Thanks again,
Adam Boland Executive Producer

Adam, Thank you for your response. I assume then that you will be suing Executive Excellence for using your logo with out approval!? Your people on site had the opportunity to have others wear the shirts with the logo - not the 3 people
to be centre stage and front the cameras. I don't doubt your embarrassment and sorrow - but then again it was just too good an opportunity to
pass up - wasn't it? Yours sincerely Ian
Received 1356Hrs: Hi Ian, Those shirts were not made by Sunrise. We didn't ask for them. These guys have just walked the Kokoda Track -- so this was their daily uniform. They couldn't pack
wardrobe. They continued walking straight after the service. As Kochie mentioned, Executive Excellence asks them to wear the shirts - so they can readily identify
them. Apparently, there are quite a few teams walking the track at any given time, confusing the local
porters. I understand your point -- and had we been involved in the shirts, we would never have agreed. Frankly, I'm embarrassed and very sorry. Thanks for your feedback. Adam Boland Executive Producer

as a advertising opportunity with 3 promotional (dummies) in 7 Sunrise uniforms, centre stage is totally in appropriate and demeaning to the whole Anzac Day ethos!
You and your opportunistic cheap self promotion disgust me. Attach your picture here:
